Spatial clusters of Varroa destructor control strategies in Europe

چکیده

Abstract Beekeepers have various options to control the parasitic mite Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies, but no empirical data are available on methods they apply practice. We surveyed 28,409 beekeepers maintaining 507,641 colonies 30 European countries concerning methods. The set of 19 different diagnosis and measures was taken from annual COLOSS questionnaire colony losses. most frequent activities were monitoring infestations, drone brood removal, oxalic acid applications formic applications. Correspondence analysis hierarchical clustering principal components showed that six (not necessarily used ones) significantly contribute defining three distinctive clusters terms Europe. Cluster I (eight Western countries) is characterized by use amitraz strips. II comprises 15 Scandinavia, Baltics, Central-Southern This cluster long-term treatments. III dominant usage fumigation formed seven Eastern countries. median number treatments applied per beekeeper lowest III. Based estimation numbers included countries, we extrapolated proportions treated with suggests circa 62% Europe amitraz, followed for next largest percentage colonies. discuss possible factors determining choice clusters.

Biology and control of Varroa destructor.

The ectoparasitic honey bee mite Varroa destructor was originally confined to the Eastern honey bee Apis cerana. After a shift to the new host Apis mellifera during the first half of the last century, the parasite dispersed world wide and is currently considered the major threat for apiculture. The damage caused by Varroosis is thought to be a crucial driver for the periodical colony losses in ...

Acaricide (pyrethroid) resistance in Varroa destructor

Pesticide resistance is the ability of a pest to survive normally lethal rates of a pesticide. The ability to develop resistance to a wide range of pesticides is a widespread phenomenon among the mites, so it was almost inevitable that varroa would become resistant against the commonly used acaricides such as the pyrethroids, taufluvalinate (Apistan) and flumethrin (Bayvarol). Studies found tha...

Field efficacy of acaricides against Varroa destructor

Field trials were conducted in Northeast Spain (Aragón) to evaluate the effectiveness of two acaricides against Varroa destructor. These experiments took into account the season of the year, apiary, colony, and developmental state and strength of the colony. The acaricides used were a synthetic (amitraz, Apivar®) and a natural (formulated from Api Life Var®, thymol oil and thymol alcohol) produ...

Bidirectional Transfer of RNAi between Honey Bee and Varroa destructor: Varroa Gene Silencing Reduces Varroa Population

The mite Varroa destructor is an obligatory ectoparasite of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) and is one of the major threats to apiculture worldwide. We previously reported that honey bees fed on double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) with a sequence homologous to that of the Israeli acute paralysis virus are protected from the viral disease. Here we show that dsRNA ingested by bees is transferred to the Va...

Combating Varroa destructor in Honeybee Colonies Using Flumethrin or Fluvalinate

Gregorc A. , M. I . Smodi‰ ·kerl : Combating Varroa destructor in Honeybee Colonies Using Flumethrin or Fluvalinate. Acta Vet. Brno 2007, 76: 309-314. Mite mortality in two apiaries, one with 32 and the other with 15 honeybee (Apis mellifera carnica) colonies, was recorded prior to and after flumethrin or fluvalinate treatments and after a control, oxalic-acid application. During the 42and 51-d...
